Dr. William Crook, M.D.'s publication "The Yeast Connection Handbook," says the most common cause of gastrointestinal infections and oropharyngeal infections is Candida albicans. These conditions are called candidiasis, and especially when referring to the oral cavity, are known as thrush. "The Yeast Syndrome," by Dr. John Townsend, M.D. and Morton Walker, D.P.M., describes candidiasis symptoms as ranging from bloating, diarrhea and constipation to headaches, irritability, menstrual problems and vaginal itching. Yeast-free diets, or Candida diets, were developed to assist in the holistic treatment of polysystemic Candida infections.
Meats
Animals proteins are a very large portion of the Candida diet. This food from grass-eating animals includes lean meats such as beef, venison and lamb as well as poultry, mercury-free fish and eggs. It is suggested that the meat products consumed should come from free-range farms, where the animals are less likely to be injected with excessive amounts of antibiotics and steroids, Dr. Crook advises.
Vegetables and Nuts
Vegetables, seeds and nuts, except peanuts, make up the second most important part of the yeast-free diet. Asparagus. artichokes, avocados, eggplant, olives, green leafy vegetables, carrots, celery, beets, beans, lentils, flax seeds, garlic, sunflower seeds, tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and turnips are prime examples of the foods in this group, according to "The Yeast Handbook," by John Trowbridge, M.D. and Morton Walker, D.P.M.
Fruits
Fruits are eliminated from the diet during the first phase of its three phases. During the second and third phases, fruits are added back in starting with apples, which are known to regulate blood sugar, and melons. By the third phase, berries and citrus fruits are added back in. Last are the more sugary fruits, such as bananas, according to "Candida Albicans: Could Yeast Be Your Problem?" by Leon Caitow, D.O.
Oils and Extracts
Coconut oil, flax seed oil, olive oil and oregano oil are suggested to be used throughout the entire course of the diet. These oils, especially coconut oil, have antifungal properties according to Candida-albicans-cure.com. Grape seed extract, olive leaf extract and oregano are also included in this group. (See references 1, 2 and 3)
Foods to Avoid
The most important foods to avoid when trying to cleanse yourself of yeast are foods containing sugar, such as confections, soda pop, candies and processed foods. White flours, pastas, rice and most dairy, except yogurt, are additional foods that should be eliminated from your diet. Yeast-containing foods such as alcohol, yeast breads and vinegar, except for apple cider vinegar, need to be avoided as well.
