If your hair looks like a puff ball whether you blow dry it or let it air dry, you may have naturally frizzy hair. Hair frizzes when it is so dry, it begins to absorb moisture from the air, making it kinky and full of static. Changing your hair washing and styling routine may help calm your hair down and turn your bad hair days into good ones.

Step 1

Shampoo and condition your hair every time you shower, then use a leave-in conditioner to infuse more moisture into your hair and prevent it from becoming frizzy.

Step 2

Keep your fingers out of your hair until it is completely dry if you opt to let it air dry. Combing your fingers through your hair will make your hair look even frizzier.

Step 3

Trim your hair, or get it trimmed by a stylist, every six to eight weeks, says Alan Tosler of the tosler.davis salon in New York City in the article "How to Fight Frizzy Hair" in "Marie Claire" magazine. Trimming your hair will keep split ends from splitting all the way up the hair shaft.

Step 4

Smooth a leave-in glossing cream onto your hair before going to bed so you don't have to spend an hour with the blow dryer in the morning. Shampoo your hair before going to bed, then slick your wet hair back and tie it into a loose bun. Go to sleep with your hair up, and in the morning, you'll have smooth, wavy hair that is free of frizz.

Step 5

Rub a dry shampoo into your roots every other day instead of rewashing and styling your hair, recommends Mary McConnell in the article "3 Steps to Frizz-Free Summer Hair" in "Good Housekeeping." This way, you hair will stay frizz-free for days without having to style it all over again.

Tips and Warnings

  • If you opt to straighten your hair, use a straightener that has silicone-covered heating plates.
  • Consult a doctor if your frizzy hair is accompanied by any concerning health symptoms.
