Certain models of baby cribs are marketed as "convertible," meaning that a parent may reconfigure the crib as the child grows older. Once the baby becomes a toddler, you can remove one side of the crib to create a day bed; as she outgrows the day bed, you can replace the bed's original frame with a full-sized one. These cribs are designed for easy disassembly, and may come packaged with additional accessories intended to help the product maintain a consistent appearance regardless of configuration.

Day Bed

Step 1

Remove the bedding from the mattress and place it next to the stationary side of the crib. Examine the ends of the crib and locate the bolts securing the stationary side in place. Remove the bolts and lift the stationary side free of the crib's frame. Remove the mattress from the crib and set it aside.

Step 2

Locate and remove the bolts securing the metal spring frame's mounting bars in place. Lower the mounting bars to the lowest position, then replace the bolts and tighten them to secure the bars in place.

Step 3

Insert the guard rail, if present, into the open end of the crib and position it next to the metal spring frame. Align the holes at the ends of the rail with those in the ends of the crib. Insert bolts through the holes and tighten them securely.

Step 4

Replace the mattress onto the spring frame. Fit the bedding back onto the mattress.

Full-sized Bed

Step 1

Remove the bedding from the crib's mattress, then lift the mattress out of the crib. Remove the bolts securing the crib's front end to its sides. Detach the front end, then move to the rear of the crib and remove the rear end in a similar manner.

Step 2

Place the front end of the crib next to one end of a full-sized metal bed frame or pair of bed rails; some models of crib come packaged with a replacement headboard for use instead. Align the holes located at the end of the bed frame or rails with those found near the bottom of the crib's front end or replacement headboard. Insert bolts through the holes and tighten them securely.

Step 3

Place the rear end of the crib next to the remaining end of the frame or pair of bed rails. Align the holes in the rear end with those at the end of the frame or rails. Insert bolts through the holes and tighten them securely.

Step 4

Place a full-sized mattress onto the frame or rails. Fit the appropriate bedding onto the new mattress.
