A 2008 study by researchers in Germany, published in the journal "Epidemiology," found that in-patient admissions for autism rose by 30 percent between 2002 and 2005. In-patient autism programs offer treatment for patients with classical autism, Asperger Syndrome, Rett's Syndrome, Childhood Disintegration Disorder and Pervasive Developmental Disorder Not Otherwise Specified, or PDD-NOS; these diagnoses comprise the autism spectrum. In-patient autism programs focus on diagnosis, treatment plans and stabilization for daily life functioning at home.
University of Pittsburgh Medical Center's Western Pennsylvania Regional Center for Autism
University of Pittsburgh Medical Center's Western Pennsylvania Regional Center for Autism offers a secure in-patient program for people with autism spectrum disorder diagnoses. The in-patient program provides specialized care to determine proper diagnoses and to filter behaviors to determine whether co-morbid conditions such as mental illness, ADHD or Tourette Syndrome might be present in the patient. UPMC's program provides individual, group and family therapy, medication review and management, functional behavior assessments, ADOS and ADI testing to determine the severity of autistic behaviors, parent counseling, and educational support for children who might require long-term care and need to maintain school progress.

Children's Specialized Hospital is the largest rehabilitation center for children in the United States, according to its website. The hospital's in-patient autism program handles children from birth through age 21. Using a "coordinated multidisciplinary approach," as Children's Specialized Hospital notes on its Autism Program Web page, the program incorporates developmental screening, team evaluations with medical and behavioral specialists, ADOS and ADI evaluations with patients and caregivers to determine the severity of the spectrum diagnosis, and treatment plans designed to help the patient to function at the highest level possible in the least restrictive environment.
