Fibromyalgia is a condition characterized by muscle and joint pain throughout the body, sleep problems and overall fatigue. Fibromyalgia testing consists of a tender-point exam by your doctor, as well as medical history review. Fibromyalgia is often misdiagnosed, according to the Fibromyalgia Diet website. Pain management is a pressing concern for those who suffer from fibromyalgia. Medications and exercises are often part of the program, as is avoidance of certain foods in your diet.

Nightshade Vegetables

Vegetables in the "nightshade" category include potatoes, eggplant, tomato and sweet and hot peppers, according to the World's Healthiest Foods website. Substances called alkaloids in these types of foods may contribute in inflammation in the joints and are best avoided if you suffer from fibromyalgia.

Chocolate

Avoiding a diet that is high in acidic foods is important to combat inflammation and pain from fibromyalgia. Chocolate is acidic in nature and, in some forms, is also high in fat, sugar and caffeine. Sugar and caffeine can act as stimulants and disrupt sleep, and high-fat foods will contribute to obesity and blood sugar problems that will magnify fatigue.

Tobacco

Both smoking and smokeless tobacco products have negative effects if you have fibromyalgia. Tobacco will raise acid levels in your blood and is a leading cause in many cancers, including cancers of the lung, liver and mouth.

Cured Meats

Cured meats such as ham, bacon and salami are higher in acidity and typically contain high amounts of sodium and fat. Consuming foods that have a negative effect on overall health will also affect your fibromyalgia symptoms adversely.

Coffee and Alcohol

Coffee is acidic in nature and contains caffeine, which is a stimulant that will affect your sleep. Alcohol is also acidic and can contribute many empty calories, resulting in weight gain and more fatigue.

High-fat Dairy Products

High-fat dairy products should be avoided on a fibromyalgia diet. Foods such as whole milk, butter, cheeses, ice cream, sour cream and cream cheese will contribute extra calories, which may lead to weight gain and add to your fatigue.
