"A great grip is essential to having a great golf swing." When all-time great Ben Hogan issued that opinion, few doubted the point. You need a solid grip to hit the ball with distance and accuracy and to feel comfortable doing it. The overlapping grip is the most popular way to hold the golf club, and when it is done correctly, you have the opportunity to step up to the tee with confidence and hit the ball consistently.
Step 1
Grasp the club with your left hand to start the overlapping grip. If you are right-handed, put your left hand about 1/4 inch from the top of the club. Hold the club in front of you so the toe of the club points up. Place the club firmly in the middle of your hand, below the fleshy area that connects the thumb to the hand. Wrap your third, fourth and fifth fingers firmly around the shaft of the club; wrap the index finger just a little bit more loosely. Place your thumb down the shaft of the club.
Step 2
Place the little finger of your right hand between your index finger and middle finger of the left hand. Place your middle and ring fingers around the shaft firmly. Separate the index finger on your right hand from the other fingers. Your thumb and forefinger should be able to control the club when you grasp it firmly.
Step 3
Take a strong grip when you take hold of the club but don't grip it too tightly, which would restrict your swing. If you grip the club too loosely, the head of the club will slip when it makes contact with the ball. Grip the club at a "6" on a scale of 1 to 10, which is the same as a firm handshake.
