Natural Relief for a Sunburn

Sunburn is skin damage caused by exposure to harmful ultraviolet rays of the sun and tanning booths. Individuals with fair or freckled skin tend to be at a greater risk of developing skin cancer from this damage. Prevent sunburn by avoiding tanning booths and limiting prolonged exposure to the sun, particularly during the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. If your skin does become sunburned, there are ways that you may obtain relief naturally.

Aloe Vera

On clean skin, apply pure Aloe vera to the affected area. You may place the Aloe vera in the refrigerator for a more soothing effect.

Cold Compress

Applying a cold compress or rinsing the area in cold water may help to dissipate the heat of a sunburn and help to alleviate discomfort.

Drink Fluids

Drink plenty of fluids, as having a sunburn increases the risk of dehydration.

Prevent Infection

If blistering occurs as a result of sunburn, use clean dry bandages to prevent infection.

Moisturize

For mild sunburn, use a light moisturizer to soothe discomfort of a sunburn. Avoid thick moisturizers and petroleum.

Warning

Avoid using numbing ointments such as lidocaine or benzocaine. Contact a physician if severe painful blisters develop.
