Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, is in the heart of the Pocono Mountains, Pennsylvania's largest tourist attraction and vacation getaway. The Pocono mountain ski resorts were the first ski destinations in Pennsylvania. Since then they have attracted thousands of tourists every season. Most resorts of the region offer a variety of trails, from beginner bunny slopes to the double black diamond trails for thrill seekers. A number of the slopes in this region host both skiers and snowboarders, and even provide snowboard parks along some slopes. Camelback Resort, located 11 miles west of Stroudsburg, is a popular destination for skiing, snowboarding and tubing.
Dog Sledding
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to drive a team of huskies through the Iditarod? The Pocono Mountain region's dog sled tours allows visitors to experience the thrill of the sled race close to Stroudsburg. Guests take turns running relays as the musher and the passenger on these hour-long tours of snowy, groomed trails through the Pocono Mountains. Tours include training, a meet and greet with the huskies and a guided trip through the terrain.
Ice Fishing
The lakes of the Stroudsburg region have become popular destinations for winter fishermen. Equipped with your ice auger, spending a day on one of the region's frozen lakes can bring in catch such as trout, bass, walleye and perch. Many of the lakes in the region, including Beltzville Lake, located about 30 miles west of Stroudsburg, are stocked with both warm-water and cold-water game fish.
Ice Skating
The Stroudsburg region has many opportunities for ice skating, whether you're looking to break out your skates on a local frozen pond or enjoy the comfort and safety of an indoor rink. Steel Ice Area, located about 30 miles south of Stroudsburg, is home to the Steel Ice Center, a large indoor rink which hosts free skates and ice hockey leagues and also conducts ice skating lessons. If you want to ice skate outdoors, consult the local parks department to determine if the ice is thick enough for skating to guarantee your safety.
Snowshoeing and Cross-Country Skiing
The many trails of the Stroudsburg and Pocono region are perfect for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Many of the region's ski and snowboard resorts offer snowshoe and cross-country ski rental, as well as information about the safest and most scenic trails for traversing the winter wonderland of the Poconos on foot.
