Home Remedy for a Migraine Headache

Migraines are severe headaches that last for several hours and sometimes even days. The headaches are chronic and are often preceded by warning signs such as seeing flashing lights, tingling of the arms or legs and blind spots. The exact cause of migraine headaches is not fully understood, but family history and the environment may be part of the cause. A variety of trigger points that lead to a migraine headache include hormones, stress, foods and sensory stimuli. According to the Mayo Clinic, women are three times more likely to suffer from migraine headaches than men. A variety of home remedies may offer alternate solutions for migraine headaches.

Relaxation Techniques

Incorporate relaxation techniques such as deep breathing exercises, yoga or mediation into your daily routine to help with the pain of migraines. Learn and practice techniques by signing up for a class. Other options include gardening, walking the dog or taking a warm bath.

Feverfew

Linked to the sunflower family, feverfew has been a headache treatment for centuries. The perennial herb's leaves are generally used for medicinal purposes, however the entire plant can be used. Take 100 to 300 mg capsules as needed up to four times a day. Do not take if you are on blood-thinning medication.

Butterbur

Take butterbur extract in tablet or capsule form. The native European plant has been known to relieve symptoms of chronic migraine headache. The usual dose is 50 to 75 mg of a standardized extract two times a day, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center.

Massage

Sometimes massage helps relieve the pain of a migraine. Use essential oils such as lavender to promote tension relief and to aid in body relaxation.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture has often been used to treat migraine headaches. Tiny needles are placed on the back to reduce the symptoms of migraines. Acupuncture works best at the beginning of a migraine episode.
