Some dieters seek the fastest way to lose weight as a jump-start for fitness. This is understandable, especially when you want to look your best for other people. The diet industry sees this as a way to make money from you with fad diets. Advertisements promise quick weight loss, but for success with these diets, you must follow the rules strictly. Diets that require you to eat certain foods to lose weight may work as a short-term plan due to low calories, but they may not provide enough nutrition for your body, according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases. In addition, a diet that focuses on one type of food does not teach you how to eat healthy.

Grapefruit Diet

Grapefuit diet is a fad that has lasted since the 1930s because it is easy to follow. The main requirement is that you eat half a grapefruit with each meal, or half a cup of unsweetened grapefruit juice. The plan only lasts for 12 days. It consists of a 1,000-calorie daily menu that is low-carbohydrate with meat, fish, high-protein foods, salad, vegetables and as much black coffee or tea as you want. The diet claims that you can lose 10 lbs. in 12 days. Medical experts at the Mayo Clinic advise that quick weight loss may be from water weight, not fat loss, and that taking a slow approach to weight loss, such as 1 to 2 lbs. a week is better for maintainability. Talk to your doctor before trying a grapefruit diet.

Cabbage Soup Diet

Cabbage soup diet is a fad diet that has been around for several years in different versions. It is recommended as a one-week plan that includes cabbage soup and other foods. The diet claims that you can lose about 10 lbs. in one week. This diet is popular for people who like cabbage or soup and who don't mind eating it every day for one week. The diet is simple and easy to follow. The amount of soup that you you can eat is unlimited. In addition to cabbage, the soup recipe includes vegetables like green onions, green peppers, tomatoes, carrots, mushrooms and celery. Flavoring comes from onion soup mix, bouillon cubes, tomato juice and your choice of seasonings such as salt, pepper, parsley, curry powder or garlic powder.

Juicing Diet

Juicing has become popular over the years because compared to complete fasting, it offers some nutrition including carbohydrates, calories, vitamins and minerals. Juicing causes quick weight loss due to low calorie consumption, loss of fluids and reduction in body fat. The diet is a partial fast that only includes some juices and broths, so you should only follow this diet plan for a few days maximum without consulting a physician. Juicing is good for people who want an extremely low-calorie diet without total fasting.
