Dirt jumping and trail riding remain prominent genres of freestyle BMX riding. Riders use the man-made dirt ramps to execute freestyle BMX tricks. Trails often link dirt ramps together, allowing riders to perform multiple tricks in a row. Ramp and trail builders pack the dirt down by adding water to make the riding surface as stable as possible. BMX dirt jumping and trail riders should always wear a helmet to prevent injuries caused by slideouts and short landings.
Step 1
Push the BMX pedals forward in a circular motion to gain momentum. Bend your knees to center your weight over the BMX to prevent the bike from sliding out on the dirt trail. Lean your body into each turn to shift the weight of the BMX as it maneuvers around the curve. Start pedaling halfway through the turn to regain any lost speed.
Step 2
Approach the dirt ramp with speed to avoid a short landing, which could slam you against the back of the landing ramp. Bend your knees as the two wheels of the BMX begin to climb up the face of the dirt ramp. Extend your legs and pull up on the handlebars as you reach the peak of the dirt ramp.
Step 3
Bear down on the handlebars to level out the BMX in the air. Lean forward as you float toward the landing ramp to make the two wheels of the BMX parallel with the face of the ramp. Bend your knees as your two tires touch down on the dirt face of the landing ramp.
Step 4
Pedal forward to gain enough speed to clear the next ramp. Repeat the turning, takeoff and landing procedures to successfully ride your BMX on dirt trails and ramps.
