While Wall Street and the Garment District may sound boring to most children, this does not mean New York City is void of kid-friendly activities. A wide array of options keep kids active, such as playgrounds, fitness classes and aquatic centers. Having your children participate in these activities can help them learn lifelong healthy habits.
Healthy Eating
Take the kids to the Children's Museum of Manhattan for engaging activities that will have your children beaming from ear to ear. This museum is filled with book- and television-themed activities. Exhibits range from arts and crafts to live performances by dance troupes and Broadway artists. As a way to teach your children about healthy-eating habits, head to the museum's Hands-on Healthy Tots exhibit, which focuses on nutrition and healthy living through stories, art, games and science experiments.
Outside Activities
At the Diana Ross Playground, located in Central Park, your children can spend hours jumping, sliding, running and swinging. This playground, named after its benefactor, has two main structures, one for toddlers and one for bigger children. The entire playground is made out of wood and the ground is covered in sand.
Yoga
Yoga helps children explore and challenge their bodies and minds. This activity helps them stretch and promotes strength, flexibility and coordination. At Karma Kids Yoga, a children's yoga class uses interactive games and animated postures to teach kids about nature, animals and their bodies. The program is designed for kids to learn inner-strength, respect and how to develop self-confidence. Parent-child classes are available for children ages 6 weeks to 10 years old.
Swimming
Pack the bathing suits and take the kids to one of New York City's swimming pools. At the Flushing Meadows Corona Park, you will find a 25-meter pool with an adjustable floor. The staff can change the depth of the pool from a few inches to 7 feet. The pool also features three diving boards. At the Brooklyn Bridge Park Playground, kids can enjoy a water park that features a floating river. A sandbox village and Tarzan ropes increase the fun factor.
Dance Parties
Baby Loves Disco brings kids and parents together in an entertaining environment. At these dance parties, which occur at Le Poisson Rouge, children ages 6 months to 7 years can dance around with scarves, through laser lights or through bubbles blown by a bubble machine. This activity allows the whole family to get a workout.
