Delaware children and teens can enjoy plenty of outdoor recreation in the state's many state parks and beaches. Numerous skate parks are available, and a wide range of sports facilities are offered at Delaware's numerous state parks, some of which are dog-friendly. Summer camp options are also available though some state parks.
Beach Activities
Rehoboth Beach in Delaware offers many recreational activities for children and teens who enjoy staying active. Delaware Seashore State Park is a 2,018-acre barrier island bordered by the Atlantic Ocean on one side and Rehoboth and Indian River Bay on the other. Enjoy windsurfing, fishing and boating in the park's shallow bays or camp at one of the Indian River Inlet's 434 sites. Surf fishing is also popular, and the park has a special-access pier for those who are disabled.
Skate Parks
Kids and teens have several options in Delaware skate parks. The Milford River Skate Park in Milford has a 4-foot quarter pipe into a hip, a pyramid with three stairs and a rail on top and a 5-foot half pipe. Pipe Dreams in Rehoboth is Delaware's only indoor skate park. The park is 7,000 square feet and has a 4-foot mini ramp with a spine, 16 feet wide, three 6-foot extensions and a rollover among many other ramps and and quarter pipes. There are soda machines, a snack machine and a big screen television for watching videos.
Go Karts and Mini Golf
Enjoy go-kart races and two miniature golf courses at Jungle Jim's River Safari Water Park in Rehoboth. Additional activities include six batting cages, rock climbing and bumper boats. Rock climbing in Jungle Jim's is a 24-foot vertical climb with three skill levels. There are five go-kart tracks, including tracks for children and tracks for teen and adult drivers.
Long Distance Running
Children and teens who enjoy running can find plenty of trails at White Clay Creek State Park in Newark. The park's greenery and streams are the backdrop for its running and hiking trails. Additional park activities include playgrounds, a nature center, horseshoe pits, disc golf course, picnic area and volleyball court. The park also features summer camps for youth who enjoy nature and related craft activities as well as mountain biking and hiking camps.
Dog-Friendly Parks
Kids and teens can bring their dogs to several state parks, including Lums Pond State Park, which allows dogs of all sizes on the grounds for no additional fee, though dogs cannot be left unattended. The park also has a lake, sports facilities and other land and water recreation. The Cape Henlopen State Park Campground allows dogs on the beaches during the offseason, however, they must be leashed.
