Bacterial vaginosis is a broad term which refers to the different types of bacterial infections that cause vaginitis, or feminine itching and burning. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, 40 percent of all vaginitis is caused by the bacteria candida albicans. These infections are commonly referred to as yeast infections. While medications do exist to treat severe yeast infections, most cases of vaginitis can be treated with a few simple remedies.

Nutrition

When dealing with a yeast infection, it is important to avoid foods that encourage bacterial growth or suppress the immune system. Eliminate foods, at least temporarily, such as dairy products, sugary treats, refined flours like white bread, as well as coffee, caffeinated drinks and alcohol. Eat foods which are high in B vitamins such as legumes, nuts, whole grains and dark green leafy vegetables. Also, include plenty of high-fiber, antioxidant-rich foods like fresh fruits and vegetables, and cut back on high-fat items like butter or margarine. In addition, take supplemental vitamin C, zinc and probiotics to further strengthen the immune system.

Herbs

A number of medicinal herbs have naturally occurring anti-fungal and antibacterial properties. One study published by the Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy from 1999 showed that berberine, the main chemical component of the herb goldenseal, significantly inhibited the growth of candida albicans when compared to other compounds. Goldenseal extract can be taken in capsule form, or the liquid extract may be added to a douche or external wash. Other common herbal remedies with antibacterial effects include tea tree oil, garlic, cat's claw and grapefruit seed extract. As most herbs have not yet received FDA approval, it is important to take them only under the direction of a health care professional.

Home Remedies

A white vinegar douche is both practical and inexpensive. The University of Maryland recommends combining 1 to 2 tbsp. of white vinegar with 1 pint of water, douching daily for 10 to 14 days.

For more persistent or chronic infections, equal amounts of goldenseal with oregano leaf and echinacea extract should be combined. A heaping tablespoon of this mixture should be added to 1 pint of boiling water, steeped, then cooled. Mixture can be used in a douche for 10 to 14 days. Patients should always consult a physician before trying these methods along with a prescribed medical plan.
