Over 106 million American adults carry a total cholesterol level of 200 or higher, a number that is considered elevated. Many physicians prescribe drugs to lower cholesterol; however, there are herbs and other nutrients that can help lower it naturally. These nutrients and herbs are derived from plants, trees and other sources and can be helpful in lowering cholesterol levels.
Garlic
One of the useful purposes of garlic is helping lower cholesterol by decreasing the amount of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol. It may even prevent the liver from producing excess fat and cholesterol. Some natural practitioners suggest that eating three cloves of garlic a day could help manage cholesterol levels. Another benefit of this spicy bulb is its potential in keeping the blood thin and free of potentially deadly blood clots.
Green Tea
The properties of green tea contain components that help raise high-density lipoprotein (HDL) "good" cholesterol and reduce the levels of LDL "bad" cholesterol. Drinking, or taking green tea capsules, can not only raise the level of the good cholesterol, it is also a beneficial antioxidant that helps prevent other illnesses.
Vitamin B3 Niacin
Vitamin B3 is a water-soluble vitamin vital for energy release in tissues and cells. It belongs to the B-complex group of vitamins. It is suggested that niacin can significantly lower bad LDL cholesterol, lower triglycerides, and raise good HDL cholesterol. Niacin plays an important role in ridding the body of toxic and harmful chemicals. Niacin is available in prescription form and as a dietary supplement.
Artichoke-Leaf Extract
Artichoke-leaf extract may work by limiting the production of cholesterol in the body. It includes a compound called cynarin that is believed to raise the bile production in the liver and increases the flow of bile from the gallbladder, which may increase cholesterol excretion. While artichokes are a healthy alternative to consuming other high-fat foods, they should not be solely relied upon to lower your cholesterol.
Other Herbs
Guggul is another cholesterol-lowering herb that can reduce triglycerides. It is said that hawthorn lowers blood levels of cholesterol as well as triglycerides. Ginger is an important herb that is suggested for its cholesterol-reducing properties. Alfalfa leaves help reduce the blood cholesterol levels by decreasing plaque deposits on artery walls. Red yeast rice has been found to lower cholesterol. And soluble fiber appears to be able to lower LDL cholesterol by a reduction of cholesterol absorption in the intestines.
Warning
High cholesterol can cause deadly illnesses such as heart disease, strokes and liver or kidney disease. Lowering your cholesterol level decreases your chance for these illnesses and herbs, generally, can be used along with prescribed medication, a healthy diet and exercise. It is important to talk with your doctor if you are taking other medications before using herbs.
