Many women throughout the world shave their armpits in an attempt to have smooth, hairless skin in this area. However, regular armpit shaving often leads to razor burn, bumps or irritation. Learning the proper way to shave the area and making simple lifestyle modifications may prevent this irritation from occurring.

Step 1

Select a new, sharp razor. Using an old razor or one with a dull blade may increase the likelihood of razor burn or bumps.

Step 2

Shave your armpits towards the end of a bath or shower. This allows the steam to open the pores of the armpits, which makes getting a close shave easier. If this is not possible, press a warm washcloth on the armpits to soften the hair and open pores, suggests MayoClinic.com.

Step 3

Apply shaving cream, gel or soap to the armpit. Select products that are fragrance-free or designed for sensitive skin. Work up a thick lather before shaving.

Step 4

Move the razor in the direction of the hair growth when shaving. Avoid shaving against hair growth, as this may lead to irritation.

Step 5

Rinse the excess lather from the armpits with warm water. Women who fail to thoroughly rinse this area may experience irritation from the residue of the soap or shaving cream.

Step 6

Pat the armpits dry with a towel. Rubbing them may irritate the skin and make bumps more likely.

Step 7

Use a gentle deodorant or antiperspirant. Using products containing glycerol and sunflower seed oil may reduce irritation and soothe skin, according to a 2007 study published in the "International Journal of Cosmetic Science."

Tips and Warnings

  • Avoid wearing clothing that is tight around the armpit area, as this also may lead to irritation. Aloe vera lotion or hydrocortisone cream may soothe razor burn or irritated skin, according to BreastCancer.org. Waxing the armpits may not cause as much irritation as shaving does.
