An airbrush tan generally only takes a few minutes to complete, and the results last several days. Having the right supplies on hand will assure that the tan is even and natural looking.
Airbrush
The airbrush is an important part of the sunless tanning process. It is operated by a small turbo air compressor that pushes the solution out of the nozzle. There is a pressure regulator and gauge that allows for proper coverage of the DHA solution. The spray gun also includes cups for a consistent flow of solution. Some airbrushes contain dual pressure regulators that make it easier for applying a lighter or heavier coat to particular clients based on their needs.
Solution
Most solutions contain DHA, which is the active ingredient that changes the color of the skin. DHA darkens the skin with its reaction to amino acids in the skin cells. It is important that the solution reaches all areas of the skin for maximum results. Most solutions contain a bronzer. The bronzer provides an instant golden glow and fades away as the tanning solution begins to work. There is also a solution that provides a temporary tan that does not contain DHA. This product, called Tango Tan, washes off completely after application.
Booth
The booth or tan area is an important aspect in the tanning process. This assures there is a safe and comfortable location for completing the self-tan process. Automatic airbrush tanning systems that spray clients down are the most used in booths. Booths can be created in any private area for use. Hanging waterproof material should be attached to the walls to prevent the spray from staining the wood or drywall. Portable units should also be used with portable airbrush guns.
Accessories
Making sure the tan is successful before and after is essential in what each client is seeking. Having some accessories on hand will help with this process. Examples include self-stick soles, which are similar to shoe soles except the client can walk around without getting tanning solution on the bottom of her feet. Disposable bras and thongs are also available for those who do not wish to stain their bathing suits or lingerie. Disposable goggles should also be worn by the client to assure the solution stays out of the eyes.
Airbrush Cleaning Kit
An airbrush cleaning kit is used to keep the nozzles in the airbrush and the tubes clear and free of buildup and debris. The kit usually consists of small wire brushes that can be inserted into the tubes. A solution of water and isopropyl alcohol can be used to wipe up stained tubing and cups. Keeping the airbrush equipment clean will prevent streaking and blotchy applications.
