Skin is a person's largest organ and performs many important functions. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC), skin protects a person's body from infection and sunburn, stores vitamins and helps maintain an appropriate body temperature. Skin can also be an object of vanity; people want their skin to look good to impart a notion of youthfulness and beauty. Eating well, resting and protecting your skin from harsh elements can all keep your skin looking good.
Step 1
Limit direct exposure to the sun and protect yourself when you are outside in the bright light. Wear sunscreen to protect your skin from harmful ultraviolet rays that can cause you to burn. The Mayo Clinic states that people who sunbathe or otherwise soak up too many rays without protecting themselves are more likely to develop skin cancer, wrinkles and unsightly age spots.
Step 2
Keep your skin looking young and smooth by using gentle cleaners when bathing. Soaps with heavy scents can cause your skin to lose too much of its natural oils and can cause your skin to feel dry and look flaky. Cleansers with abrasive textures may irritate your skin. Choose a mild soap and wash in warm water. Hot showers that last longer than 15 minutes can strip your skin of its natural moisturizers as well.
Step 3
Drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your skin hydrated and looking good. Your skin stores water, making the cells plump and healthy. Becoming dehydrated can cause a variety of health problems and may cause your skin to lose its healthy sheen.
Step 4
Keep your skin supple by staying smoke-free. The Mayo Clinic reports that the skin of smokers can cause premature aging and wrinkles due to a loss of elasticity and nutrients. If you smoke, you can reverse the process and help your skin become healthier by quitting.
Step 5
Eat a healthy diet full of fresh fruits and vegetables that are antioxidant-rich. Summer fruits, such as berries, cherries and melons, are especially good for the skin. Dark leafy green vegetables are rich in vitamins and also contribute to healthy-looking skin. The Mayo Clinic suggests that using olive oil in cooking may also help your skin look smooth and young.
