Homemade hair treatments are an affordable and natural alternative to purchased conditioners. Mayonnaise combines the moisturizing properties of oil with the benefits of egg protein, while honey adds softness and shine. You can use a mayonnaise and honey conditioner on dry, normal or damaged hair to condition your hair.

Recipe

Combine mayonnaise and honey in a small bowl. Mix together ½ cup to 1 cup of mayonnaise and 3 to 6 tbsp. of honey, depending on the length of your hair. Stir together well. You may add additional oil, like olive or jojoba oil, to this mixture if desired. Make only as much mayonnaise hair conditioner as you need for a single use and discard the leftovers.

Function

Apply the mayonnaise to dry, combed hair. Work the honey and mayonnaise mixture through your hair from the ends upward toward the roots of your hair. Cover your head with a plastic shower cap or plastic wrap and leave in place for 15 minutes to 1 hour, according to CosmeticsDiary.com. You can even leave the mayonnaise in place overnight, reports Daily Glow. Rinse well and shampoo to remove the oily residue left by the conditioning hair treatment.

Time Frame

Make time for a homemade deep conditioning treatment at least once a month. If your hair is quite dry or damaged, use a mayonnaise and honey recipe on your locks as often as once a week. If you limit washing because your hair is dry, you may find it helpful to use a deep conditioner before each shampoo.

Benefits

Using a homemade hair treatment can add moisture to your hair and temporarily smooth the hair shaft to add shine. Adequate moisture from deep conditioning treatments will make hair manageable, reduce frizz and reduce flyaways. Opting for a homemade hair recipe allows you to pamper yourself while you deep condition your hair with inexpensive supplies already in your pantry and refrigerator.

Warning

Wash out your mayonnaise based conditioner over the sink or bathtub rather than in the shower, suggests CosmeticsDiary.com. Oily residue from the treatment may increase your risk of a slip or fall. If your hair feels oily or greasy, try a diluted apple cider vinegar rinse, recommends website Daily Glow. Add one cup of apple cider vinegar to three cups of cool water and pour over your hair.
