Before you try expensive commercial or prescription acne formulations, there are a number of home remedies you can try. Effective acne treatment can be as close as your kitchen. Develop an entire skin care regimen using only products you already have in your refrigerator and pantry. These home remedies may also be less irritating to your skin than medicated soaps, creams and gels. The goal is to keep your skin as clean and oil-free as possible.

Step 1

Make a thick paste out of dry oatmeal, honey and lukewarm water. Wet your face and use the oatmeal mixture as an exfoliating scrub. Oatmeal absorbs excess oil, while honey moisturizes and tones the skin.

Step 2

Scoop the pulp from a fresh tomato and apply it to your face like a mask. Lie back and allow it to work for 20 minutes. The citric acid in tomato juice absorbs oil and may help clear pores of blackheads.

Step 3

Squeeze fresh lime juice into a jar, and keep it in your refrigerator to use as a facial toner. The cool sensation is refreshing, and limes, like tomatoes, contain plenty of citric acid. Use the toner on days when you don't have time for a tomato mask.

Step 4

Mix baking soda with water to form a thick paste. Apply it to blemishes overnight as a spot treatment. If you don't have baking soda, crush plain uncoated aspirin and dampen it with enough honey and water to make a spot-treatment paste, or use calamine lotion.

Step 5

Drink nettle tea for its anti-inflammatory properties, which may help treat acne from the inside. Keeping the body well-hydrated also helps flush your system of toxins.

Things You'll Need

  • Honey
