Benazepril is a prescription angiotensin-converting enzyme, or ACE, inhibitor used to control high blood pressure symptoms in hypertensive patients. This medication works by relaxing blood vessels, which helps blood flow more easily throughout a patient's body. Benazepril is administered orally as a tablet and can be taken up to twice daily, or as prescribed by a doctor. Patients should be aware of benazepril side effects before beginning treatment with this blood pressure medication.

Headache

Headache is the most common side effect of benazepril, and affected approximately 6 percent of patients during clinical trials for this medication, according to RxList. Headache pain can be mild to severe and may recur during subsequent dosing. With continued use, the frequency of headache pain typically diminishes. Patients who find headache pain bothersome can take an over-the-counter pain medication, such as acetaminophen, to alleviate this side effect.

Dizziness

A decrease in blood pressure caused by benazepril can induce episodes of dizziness or lightheadedness in treated patients. Sensations of dizziness may be most apparent when a patient attempts to stand, Drugs.com warns. Patients who become dizzy can appear unstable while standing or walking, and should remain seated until such sensations pass in order to limit injury from falling. If a patient faints or loses consciousness while taking benazepril, he should contact a doctor immediately for further evaluation and care.

Sleepiness or Drowsiness

Patients receiving treatment with benazepril may become unusually sleepy or drowsy as a side effect of this medication, MayoClinic.com reports. Affected patients can have difficulty concentrating at work or school and may take naps frequently throughout the day to remain energized. Certain patients may also experience sensations of weakness, which may exacerbate fatigue symptoms.

Cough

Treatment with benazepril can cause persistent cough side effects in patients, PubMed Health reports. Patients who experience vocal hoarseness, breathing difficulties, fever or additional flu-like symptoms while taking this medication should contact a doctor as soon as possible.
