Winsor Pilates is a trademark name for a specific type of Pilates workout created by Mari Winsor. Like all Pilates workouts, the emphasis is on exercise consisting of continuous movement through a full range of motion. Proper breathing and exercise technique are crucial for increasing your muscular strength, endurance and flexibility. By adding equipment, higher intensity levels burn more calories, resulting in a leaner look. Exercises focusing on your core muscles--your abdominal and lower back muscles--provide a strong foundation for your skeleton, improving your posture while reducing the risk for back problems.

History

Winsor Pilates was created by Mari Winsor, a former professional dancer. In 1990, Winsor opened her first Pilates studio in California, with a client list that included celebrities and athletes. In 2003, Mari began producing a series of Winsor Pilates DVDs, reaching a national audience.

Types

Winsor Pilates combines traditional Pilates with muscular training. The dynamic movement sequencing is challenging and effective. In addition, there are various pieces of training equipment that add higher levels of resistance and intensity to the workouts. Pieces such as the Core Plus Reformer and the Accelerator offer a low-cost alternative to more expensive reformers.

Function

The Winsor Pilates workout focuses on establishing a mind-body connection through controlled breathing, concentration, posture and perfection of movement technique. The core muscles are used throughout the workout. The abdominal muscles contract to bend, extend and rotate your torso. In addition, your abdominal and lower back muscles work to stabilize your torso while your limbs are in motion. Core muscles are also activated to maintain correct posture with all movements. With the added resistance of training equipment, more muscle fibers are recruited, resulting in increased results.

Effects

Abdominal training combining movement and stability techniques results in reaching deeper layers of the abdominal muscle. The effects of dynamic sequences of movement increase the amount of calories burned in the workout. When calories burned exceed calories consumed, excess body fat is reduced. Increased muscle tone combined with decreased body fat gives your body a lean and sculpted appearance. Results are enhanced when combined with proper nutrition.

Considerations

While Winsor Pilates workouts offer modifications for the high-intensity workout, it is not suggested for use by beginner-level participants. First-time exercisers should consult a physician before starting an exercise program.
