In recent years, some non-traditional therapies have gained popularity as alternative approaches to cancer treatment. Alternative treatments have not been proven effective or safe, and may lead to life-threatening effects, according to the American Cancer Society. For this reason, cancer treatment alternatives should not replace medically prescribed treatments and should be fully discussed with a physician prior to use.

Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is the use of plant oils for therapeutic purposes. Advocates of aromatherapy believe that certain scents relieve emotional distress, physical discomfort and heighten spiritual wellness. The National Cancer Institute states that aromatherapy functions as supplementary therapy for stress management, enhanced well-being and reduced anxiety in cancer patients. Aromatherapy is often simultaneously with other holistic treatments such as massage therapy and acupuncture. Generally, the oils are not intended for consumption and are diluted before use.

Yoga

Yoga is a holistic practice that combines breathing techniques, physical poses, relaxation and meditation. Yoga is considered a safe technique for improved fitness, health, spirituality and relaxation, according to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine. Although, yoga is not a cure for cancer, it may help remedy stress related to having cancer and undergoing cancer treatments.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a Chinese holistic practice that involves inserting small needles into designated areas on the body. Acupuncture is believed to balance and stimulate energy in the body. Some proponents of acupuncture also believe that it enhances circulation in the body. According to the National Cancer Institute, acupuncture is used by cancer patients for pain reduction and to reduce vomiting and nausea associated with cancer treatments. Additional research is needed, however, to validate the effectiveness of acupuncture in treating cancer and reducing pain. The National Cancer Institute states that acupuncture is a promising treatment for chemotherapy-induced vomiting and nausea.

Gerson Therapy

Gerson therapy was created by Max Gerson between 1930 and the 1950s. It is a nutritional treatment that enforces nutrient and dietary intake changes. Patients are encouraged to consume vegetarian foods, organic fruits and dietary supplements such as enemas, pancreatic enzymes and other biological supplements. According to the National Cancer Institute, the program is meant to detoxify the body while strengthening the immune system and increasing potassium levels. Gerson therapy lacks proof of effectiveness and scientific research, however.
