Peeling fingernails is a common problem, especially when the hands are frequently exposed to cold weather, water, harsh detergents, disinfectants and chemicals, according to Health Services at Columbia University. Often, a few changes in your daily routine can eliminate peeling fingers. See your physician or dermatologist if simple treatments don't work and your nails are still peeling, as the problem could be a fungus or a nail infection.
Step 1
Wear warm gloves to protect your nails from wind and cold weather. Wear rubber or plastic gloves when washing dishes or working with chemicals.
Step 2
Avoid polish, polish remover, nail wraps and artificial nails, which can damage the nails. Don't attempt to heal peeling nails with commercial nail hardeners, which often contain formaldehyde and can make your nails brittle.
Step 3
Improve your diet to improve the health of your nails. Include protein from lean meat, fish, nuts or beans in your diet. Eat a variety of fruits and vegetables containing vitamins A, B and C, as well as calcium and minerals such as iodine and iron. Stay well-hydrated by drinking at least eight glasses of water per day.
Step 4
Moisturize your hands and nails three times per day, or massage jojoba oil or vitamin E oil into your nails, advises Dr. Kristie Leong. Treat severely dry nails by applying a heavy moisturizer before bed, then put on a pair of cotton gloves.
