One of the most enjoyable aspects of preparing for your newborn's arrival is designing and decorating her room. Both you and your newborn will be spending a lot of time in this special room and it's important that it be functional, comfortable as well as stylish. When it comes to decorating your new baby's room, there are thousands of ideas and designs for expecting moms to choose from.
Circus Room
If you like bright colors, a circus-themed room is sure to spark your baby's imagination. Benjamin Moore Paints suggests painting the walls of your baby's room a sunny yellow and the ceiling a vibrant shade of red to simulate that under-the-big-top feel.
You can use stencils to create multi-colored balloon shapes and stars on the walls. Choose curtains and bedding in contrasting colors and paint a circus mural along one wall. Choose accent pieces that incorporate your circus theme, for example, a set of circus train bookends or a clown lamp. Of course, no circus room would be complete without a selection of stuffed animals.
Nursery Rhyme Theme
If you prefer a softer color palette, a room with a nursery rhyme theme can turn into a calming and relaxing space for your little one. For your wall color, you may choose pastel shades of pink, blue, green or yellow or you may incorporate a contrasting color such as a soft brown or gray.
Choose white furniture that will stand out against the pastel hues and add a comfortable, "shabby chic" armchair. You can add stencils or framed prints of your favorite nursery rhyme characters or design your own murals.
Modern Baby Room
You may consider choosing a more modern design for your baby's room. Modern design tends to feature sleeker lines and more contemporary color combinations. For example, 2Modern recommends combining dark woods with bright colors, such as white, lime green or orange or pairing lighter furniture with darker hues, such as black and blue.
Fixtures, furniture and accessories should be functional but simple, without any unnecessary ornamentation. Use patterns sparingly to create an accent feel and choose accessories that are similar to create balance.
Favorite Characters
If you have a particular book, television or movie character that you loved as a child, you can build your baby's room design around that cherished memory. Some of the potential character themes include Winnie the Pooh, Alice in Wonderland, Curious George, Mickey Mouse, Snoopy or Cinderella. When creating a character room, choose paint and bedding that incorporates the colors used in the character's clothing. Be careful not to overdo it on the accents, choosing only a few special pieces that capture the spirit of your selected character.
