Registered dietitians are the food and nutrition experts, according to the American Dietetic Association. They have been trained to translate the science of nutrition into practical advice people can use. They also help to separate diet facts from fads and can provide knowledgeable advice on how to choose a good diet.

MyPyramid Plan

The American Dietetic Association says that in order to maintain a healthy weight, people need to learn how to balance energy intake. The MyPyramid Plan is the go-to diet for most dietitians because it provides balanced nutrition from all of the food groups. The MyPyramid Plan was developed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. It features specific guidelines on what to eat from each food group based on a person's weight, height, age and activity level. The plan offers tips on how to make healthy food choices and it offers suggestions on healthy meal preparations. The MyPyramid website also offers a diet assessment program people can use as a food diary to help them control energy intake.

Joy's LIFE Diet

Dietitians recommend Joy's LIFE diet written by Joy Bauer because it is a healthy, well-guided plan to jump-start people's weight-loss. The plan is divided into four parts. Each part comes with specific allowable food lists, meal plans, recipes and food dos and don'ts. The diet also includes information on how to control portions, the importance of eating regularly and advice on how to make healthy food choices. In addition to the diet, Joy's LIFE diet also includes an exercise program with illustrated exercises. To motivate dieters, each chapter ends with a personal weight loss story.

The Best Life Diet

The Best Life Diet was written by Bob Greene. Dietitians recommend this diet plan because it encourages people to make long term lifestyle changes to get to a healthier weight. The plan is divided into three phases, so dieters make changes gradually. The first phase focuses on adopting healthier habits by making some behavioral changes and eliminating trigger foods. The second phase focuses more on weight loss, with weekly weigh-ins and learning how to listen to your hunger cues. The third phase teaches dieters how to make the new healthy habits last a lifetime, offering suggestions on how people can keep their weight in check through regular weigh-ins and improving overall diet quality. Bob Greene's diet is not a quick weight loss plan, but is an effective long-term weight loss plan.
