Perfume is meant to enhance your own personal scent when applied in moderation. The scent of the perfume mingles with your body's natural odors to produce a pleasing smell. When perfume is fresh, this result may be achieved. When the bottled scent is not stored correctly, it can become stale or spoiled and you may have to throw it away. Storing a perfume or eau de toilette in the proper fashion can keep you smelling fresh and your pocketbook fuller.
Step 1
Find a safe place at room temperature in which to store your perfume so it will stay fresh. Keeping perfume in an environment that is too warm or too cold can cause the composition of the liquid to change, which may alter the smell. Avoid storing perfume bottles in bathroom cabinets that become humid.
Step 2
Retain the freshness of your scent by making sure the bottle is closed when you are not using it. Caps that are loose can cause the alcohol content of the perfume to evaporate and can cause the perfume to become stale more quickly.
Step 3
Store perfume in a dark place, such as a cupboard or closet. Direct sunlight may accelerate the evaporation of alcohol. You may find that the liquid smells sour or otherwise unpleasant after being exposed to bright sunlight for a prolonged period of time.
Tips and Warnings
- Choose a perfume that is housed in a dark glass bottle rather than one that is packaged in a clear container. The exposure to light is limited in a darker container, which can keep the perfume fresher for longer.
