Many teens enjoy the outdoors and all that it has to offer. Finding outdoor activities to participate in will help keep them active and promote physical fitness. Because video games, popular television shows and cell phones can often promote a sedentary lifestyle, doing things outdoors promotes movement and gives them something physical to engage in. Find outdoor activities for your teen that combats boredom in a fun and safe setting.

Water Sports

Teens can enjoy an array of water sports that range from swimming to interacting with motor sport machinery. Sailing is a fun outdoor water activity for teens. Sailing can range from managing a small single sailboat to a larger yacht where teens have to work together to steer and direct the boat. Scuba provides outdoor adventure with minimal experience. A scuba course can range anywhere from a few hours to a few days. A basic snorkeling and scuba course will allow you to explore reefs and shores in shallow water. Deep sea diving can be achieved through advanced open water, dive master and PADI specialty training courses. You can venture independently on an excursion or sign up for a group quest in designated tour areas. Action Quest explains that other popular water sports with teens include whitewater rafting, wind surfing, wake boarding, canoeing, kayaking and water skiing.

Theme and Challenge Parks

Theme and challenge parks are scattered across the U.S. and provide daily fun activities for teens. While amusement parks provide a cure for a thrill seekers blues, teens can often get their fair share of physical activity by walking around the park and getting from ride to ride. Roller coasters, whirling rides, ferris wheels and water rides make up the bulk of most amusement park rides. Challenge parks are sometimes a part of a theme park or are separate. They offer a physical challenge to teens in which they can test their skills such as bungee jumping, extreme sky thrill rides and rock climbing. Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio offers a challenge park with a ride called the Skyscraper. This sit-down thrill ride allows two people to be catapulted in the air by a propeller that twirls 16 stories above the ground. Outdoor and indoor theme parks offer teens a chance to conquer fears while having fun.

Hiking and Biking

Hiking is a great way for a teen to challenge the beaten path and experience nature. Hiking can be fun if it involves traveling with a group of peers or reaching a destination to canoe or camp. The American Hiking Society states that there are some essentials to have when you plan your next hiking trip. A map, compass, food, water, backpacking gear, first aid kit and sunglasses are essentials you need to pack. Plan a short half day trip or pack enough gear for a few days. Biking off-road also provides a fun outdoor activity for teens. Trail Link offers a location tool for you to find biking trails in a nearby geographical location. You can choose terrain and surface so you can accommodate your bike type to where you will be riding.
