Vaseline, the brand name for petroleum jelly, contains paraffin, mineral oil and wax. According to the Skin Sciences Institute, petroleum jelly forms a protective barrier that helps dry skin rebuild moisture deep within the skin itself. Scalp problems--such as dry scalp and dandruff that often lead to itching, peeling and flaking skin--benefit from the addition of moisture. If you have dandruff, a Vaseline scalp massage several times per week can help remove loose dandruff flakes and relieve your symptoms.

Step 1

Apply the Vaseline to your scalp using your fingertips while your hair is dry. Massage the Vaseline into your scalp using the pads of your fingertips, rubbing in a circular motion.

Step 2

Continue applying the Vaseline and massaging until the Vaseline covers your entire scalp. Take care to massage your hairline, behind your ears and the nape of your neck.

Step 3

Allow the Vaseline to remain on your scalp for at least one hour. Wet your hair with warm water after the one-hour waiting period. Massage your scalp again while your hair is wet to help lift skin flakes and rinse them away.

Step 4

Shampoo your hair with a dandruff shampoo. Squeeze a quarter-sized amount of shampoo into the palm of your hand. Massage the shampoo into your scalp to remove the Vaseline.

Step 5

Rinse the shampoo and Vaseline from your hair with a cool water rinse. Pat your hair with an absorbent towel, removing as much moisture as possible. Allow your hair to air-dry.

Tips and Warnings

  • If you have dry hair in addition to dandruff, apply a daily conditioner to your hair after shampooing.
  • Avoid scratching your scalp with your fingernails while massaging the Vaseline into your scalp. Scratching can damage your scalp.
