Static cling is caused by objects having opposite electrical charges. The exchange of electrical current leaves one object with a positive charge and the other with a negative charge. The most common season for static cling is the winter. Common problems include hair raising vertically, clothes sticking together and a shock felt when touching someone. Removing static from all sources is essential to avoid the static from traveling to your hair.

Step 1

Rub a dryer sheet on sweaters and shirts before putting them over your head. After getting dressed, rub clothing one more time to remove any remaining static electricity. Wipe the dryer sheet through your hair.

Step 2

Apply a moisturizing lotion to skin after getting out of the shower. Dry skin is especially prone in the wintertime when static electricity is prevalent.

Step 3

Use a static-free hairbrush. You can buy brushes at most beauty supply stores specifically made to remain static free. Wherever possible, use natural bristle hairbrushes rather than ones with synthetic bristles.

Step 4

Apply static remover spray. You can find static remover in the cleaning aisle of most grocery stores. Lightly spray on clothing, hair or brushes if static electricity is a problem.

Step 5

Add a humidifier to the room. Dry air promotes the circulation of electricity in the air.

Step 6

Treat hair with silicone-based conditioners and products. Silicone will protect individual strands of hair, and diminishes electrical charges.

Tips and Warnings

  • Wear leather soled shoes, not rubber. Rubber soles do not allow the electricity to flow through your body. Leather shoes allow the static electricity to be released naturally.
