What To Look For

Look for a blow dryer with at least two different heat settings. The dryer should come with accessories like a diffuser. A diffuser is a must-have for curly-haired individuals. Some type of metal or plastic piece should cover the fan for safety reasons. This prevents your hair from getting caught in the fan. A diffuser is also helpful for adding volume to fine hair.

Common Pitfalls

Thinking all blow dryers are the same will cause you problems in the long run. More powerful blow dryers, like those used by professional hairstylists, are more durable than cheaper ones. Cheaper blow dryers also have fewer speeds and heat settings. The cheaper, one-option dryers can lead to burning.

Where To Buy

You can buy a basic blow dryer at any store that sells hair supplies. Drugstores also carry basic blow dryers. Mid-level blow dryers are sold at most department stores. You can purchase a salon-grade blow dryer from a department store, beauty supply store, online or order one through a beauty salon.

Cost

Brands like Revlon, Conair, Babybliss, Remington, Vidal Sassoon and Andris all sell basic models for $20 or less. These companies and others offer more expensive, mid-level dryers. They range in price between $20 to $80. Salon-type blow dryers cost over $100.

Comparison Shopping

Ionic dryers are designed to reduce frizziness and take less time to dry the hair. Ceramic dryers heat more evenly, which reduces heat damage to hair. Tourmaline dryers work much faster than other dryers but are more expensive.

Accessories

Moisturizing shampoos, conditioners, gels and serums reverse and repair heat damage; many of them are specifically targeted to work with the heat of blow dryers. Diffusers can be purchased separately and help focus hot air.
