Breaking a toe is commonly caused by a fall or accident. The fracture can cause immediate discomfort and pain. Other symptoms include pain when ambulating, swelling, bruising or tingling of the toe. A fracture can take up to 10 weeks to heal. Toes heal well with rest and protection from further injury.

Step 1

Determine whether the bone is broken by getting an X-ray. A toe may cause extensive pain even though there's no fracture. Bruising or sprains can sometimes be confused with broken toes.

Step 2

Avoid activities that add pressure or increased pain to the toe. Rest the toe to promote healing.

Step 3

Put ice on the broken area several times a day to decrease swelling and discomfort. Elevate your leg above the heart for additional relief.

Step 4

Wear a special shoe designed to aid in stability and movement. Casts are generally not applied to toes. A splint is occasionally used. A hard backing is placed behind the toe for support, and the toe is wrapped with a bandage.

Step 5

Examine the toe to confirm it's healing properly. The toe can only heal if in proper alignment, and not crooked. Bruising and swelling should decrease. Return for additional X-rays and exams if symptoms don't decrease. Surgery is not common but is occasionally necessary.

Step 6

Take over-the-counter medications such as Ibuprofen to reduce inflammation and pain. Always take as directed.
