Finding the right golf shaft to use for your driver is an important bit of self-discovery in your golf game. To get loft and distance on a consistent basis, you need to find the right shaft for your golf game. Factors like flex and torque impact your swing and the height and distance of your shot. Determining the best flex for your golf game comes from knowing your average score, handicap and swing speed.

Step 1

Practice your swing with the different shafts available to find the one that is most comfortable. There are many factors that come down to choosing the kind of shaft you will have on your golf clubs, but one of the most important is comfort. Choose from senior, ladies, regular, stiff and extra stiff. Some older players choose senior shafts because they have lost distance over time and the whippiness in the shaft will help them to get the most height and distance. The biggest and strongest golfers will use extra stiff shafts. However, the majority of golfers will use ladies, regular or stiff shafts.

Step 2

Choose a regular shaft if you think you are a solid hitter with good club head speed. While your initial inclination may be to use a club with a stiff shaft for greater control, most people are inclined to overestimate their club head speed. "Play the most flexible shaft you can control," said Scott Hennessy, president of True Temper, the world's largest steel shaft manufacturer. "If it's too soft, you'll spray the ball all over the place. Too stiff, and you'll lose distance but will have better directional control."

Step 3

Choose a stiff shaft if you regularly hit the ball 280 yards or more and would like more accuracy. You are getting good loft and distance but you want to keep the ball in the fairway a little more. Stiff shafts will help you do that. If you hit 280 yards or more and you are an accurate hitter, use a regular shaft. The extra flexibility in the shaft will allow you to hit your ball higher and further and it is appropriate since you are accurate.

Step 4

Use ladies' shafts if you need more loft and distance. Women golfers often have a more difficult time getting loft and distance because they lack the swing speed of stronger male golfers. The added flexibility of the ladies' shafts will help you make up for any strength deficit. Men can use ladies' shafts if they lack loft and distance in their tee shots.
