Reflexology involves massage and the application of pressure to certain points on the body to improve wellness and reduce stress. Reflexology can be practiced on the feet, hands and ears. Hand reflexology has a number of benefits.

How Hand Reflexology Works

In hand reflexology, all the areas and organs of the body are mapped onto the hands. According to the Maine Council of Reflexologists, reflexology divides the body into 10 zones, each of which corresponds to one of the 10 fingers. There are more than 2,500 nerve endings in each of your hands. Each of these nerves relays messages to the brain as it is stimulated by pressure or massage to help alleviate pain, relive stress and improve general well-being.

Relieve Digestive Problems

If you have an upset stomach, you can use hand reflexology to ease the discomfort. You will find the area of the hand relating to the digestive system located on the upper left palm, directly beneath the knuckles. If you are suffering from pain in the stomach or heartburn, apply gentle pressure to this area by moving your thumb across the top of your palm using small, circular motions.

Soothe Neck Discomfort

If you spend much of your working day at a desk or computer, then you probably feel neck stiffness and soreness on a regular basis. Massage the middle section of the thumb between the two knuckles. Use an even pressure and make sure that you cover the area all the way round the thumb to feel the maximum benefit.

Reduce Allergies

Seasonal allergies can cause a range of symptoms from runny nose and eyes, headaches, sore throat and blocked sinuses. Hand reflexology can be an effective self-help method for alleviating allergy symptoms. Clear your sinuses by applying gentle pressure to the tips of your fingers just below the nail. Hold each finger for a few seconds until you begin to feel relief.

Alleviate a Headache

Hand reflexology can be an effective way to combat a headache or prevent a migraine. On each hand, the tip of each finger and thumb is the region related to your head and temples. Using a gentle pressure, knead the tips of your thumb and each finger until the pain subsides.

Warning

Reflexology should not be used if you have gout, diabetes, cancer, osteoporosis, a skin disorder, a heart disorder, varicose veins, a pacemaker, deep vein thrombosis, recently undergone surgery, arthritis, severe rheumatism, fever, inflammation, slipper disc, hematoma, been using drugs or alcohol, or have been prescribed pain medications such as morphine.
