Fungoid Tinture, an antifungal treatment for athlete's foot and foot fungus, ringworm and jock itch, was introduced in 1925. Fungoid Tincture is made by Pedinol. According to its website, it is the leading over-the-counter anti-fungal medication recommended by podiatrists and pharmacists. While the American Podiatrists Medical Association has given Fungoid Tincture its seal of approval, it is best to consult with a physician about any fungal treatment or proper diagnosis of athlete's foot or ringworm.

Miconazole Nitrate

Drugs.com lists miconazole nitrate as an antibacterial that prevents fungus from growing on the skin. It is used in medications to reduce fungus in vaginal infections, athlete's foot and ringworm. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the 2 percent amount contained in Fungoid Tincture is the highest anti-fungal medication amount available without a prescription.

Inactive Ingredients

The only active ingredient in Fungoid Tincture is miconazole nitrate, so the remaining ingredients are carrier agents and preservatives to ensure the active ingredient stay potent. Other ingredients in Fungoid Tincture are phenylcarbinol, isopropyl alcohol (30 percent), water, acetic acid, and laureth-4.

According to The Free Medical Dictionary, phenylcarbinol is known by benzyl alcohol. It is a colorless liquid and is added to Fungoid Tincture to reduce the amount of bacteria in an affected area. It also inhibits bacterial growth. Isopropyl alcohol is added to the liquid mixture as a drying agent. Water is a carrier and dilution agent. Acetic acid is an antibacterial to aid in reducing fungus. Laureth-4 is an emulsifier for keeping the skin smooth.

Uses and Warnings

Fungoid Tincture treats, and possibly cures, most athlete's foot and ringworm fungus. It does not however, help any fungus of the scalp or nails. Fungoid Tincture is safe when used as directed. Fungoid Tincture should never be applied to skin of children ages 2 and younger.

Treatment Application

In order to treat fungus with Fungoid Tincture, it is best to wash the affected area with soap and water and dry completely. Fungoid Tincture comes with an applicator brush in order to ensure proper placement of medication. For nail fungus and athlete's foot, apply Fungoid Tincture twice daily underneath the nail and surrounding skin. For ringworm, apply directly to the affected area twice daily.
