A expectant mother with high blood pressure can put herself and her baby at risk. According to MayoClinic.com, these risks can include limited blood flow to the placenta, the placenta pulling away from the uterus and the mother being at an increased risk for developing cardiovascular disease later on in life. A serious condition known as preeclampsia occurs after 20 weeks of pregnancy when a mother develops high blood pressure and protein in her urine.
Step 1
Lay in bed or on the couch. According to the American Congress of Obstetrics and Gynecology, your doctor may prescribe that you be put on bed rest. According to Baby Center, many doctors do not suggest complete bed rest because of the increased risk of developing blood clots. However, reducing your daily activities and resting can help decrease blood pressure and increase the chances of you carrying your baby to term. The mother and baby will be monitored with ultrasounds, fetal heart rate assessments and blood tests.
Step 2
Sit or lay in a quiet place. You can help lower your blood pressure temporarily by relaxing your body. Think positive thoughts and breathe in and exhale slowly.
Step 3
Visit your doctor. Your doctor will need to monitor you and and your baby closely. The doctor may decide that your blood pressure is too high and admit you to the hospital. Mothers who have high blood pressure can develop preeclampsia, which can result in seizures, liver failure and stroke. According to the March of Dimes, preeclampsia symptoms include severe headache, pain in the upper right quadrant of the abdomen, blurry vision or sensitivity to light and fluid retention.
Step 4
Eat healthy foods. According to Childbirth.org, eating 80 grams of protein can help lower blood pressure. Avoid red meats, as they can raise blood pressure. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, especially cucumbers since they can help keep blood pressure low.
Step 5
Drink teas. According to Childbirth.org, avoid caffeine products and drink raspberry leaf tea, nettles, limeflower or dandelion teas to help lower blood pressure. It is important to consult with your doctor before consuming these products.
Tips and Warnings
- Having low blood pressure before becoming pregnant can reduce your chances of developing high blood pressure during pregnancy.
- Preeclampsia can be dangerous for both the mother and her baby, so it is important to follow your doctor's instructions.
