Situated in the southwest United States, New Mexico is a beacon of desert beauty. The state is a major destination for outdoor lovers thanks to the presence of the Santa Fe National Forest, the Bandelier National Monument and numerous steep hiking trails in the Taos Ski Valley of northern New Mexico. Visitors to New Mexico who are traveling by RV will find no shortage of campgrounds.
Geography
New Mexico boasts a varied landscape, with white-sand deserts, forested mountains and brilliant red rock formations. The Sangre de Cristo Mountains, which contain Wheeler Peak, the highest elevation in the state, run through the state alongside the enormous Rio Grande. New Mexico is one of the four corners states, touching Colorado, Utah and Arizona. The state has a largely arid, desert climate, with hot summers, cool winters and very little rain.
Albuquerque
Visitors to the largest city in New Mexico have their pick of several RV campgrounds. The American RV Park offers 222 level, concrete RV sites, many of which are are pull-through and can accommodate big rigs. The park offers a continental breakfast, wireless Internet access and cable TV in addition to water, sewer and electric hookups. El Rancho Mobile Home Park is in Albuquerque's inner city. The 86-site RV park offers shaded sites from nearby trees and full hookups.
Camping in Angel Fire
The Monte Verde RV Camp is situated in the mountains of Angel Fire at an elevation of 8,400 feet. The park offers 34 sites and allows tent campers. Full hookups are available, as are showers, restrooms and a dump station. Sites are equipped with fire rings and picnic tables, and both Internet access and cable TV hookups are available. The park welcomes pets, so long as they are kept on leash.
Camping in Taos
Visitors to Taos have several parks to choose from, including the Sierra Village Lodge and RV Park and the Taos Valley RV Park & Campground. Both parks are open to tent campers. The Sierra Village Lodge is a 35-site park on the banks of a steam. The lodge offers full hookups, as well as basic facilities such as restrooms and showers. The Taos Valley RV Park is a 64-site park near the Taos Plaza, an area lined with art galleries, shops and restaurants. Taos Valley features full hookups and pull-through sites.
Activities
Hikers will find numerous trails throughout Taos. The Gavilan Trail, a challenging 2.43-mile trail that begins in the village of Amizette, climb to an elevation of 11,205 feet. Located near the Taos Ski Valley, the Manzanita Trail is a 4.19-mile trail that leads up a rocky pass to the scenic Lobo Peak. Those looking for a less harrowing experience can try the 2-mile Williams Lake Trail, which passes by Williams Lake and a small waterfall.
