HCG, or Human Chorionic Gonadotropin, was first used for weight loss in the 1950s. Dr. Simeons, a British medical doctor, found that this hormone, which is produced by the female body naturally during pregnancy, directly affected the body's metabolism and its ability to burn fat and use it as energy. The method is controversial, but those who use it, believe that combined with a very low-fat diet, it is possible to lose 1 to 2 lbs a day, safely and with no exercise. HCG is not approved by the FDA for weight loss; however, doctors can prescribe it for fertility use.

Daily Injections

For weight loss, injections are needed daily, and following the strict low-fat, low-carbohydrate, 500-calorie-a-day eating plan is essential. HCG is also available in liquid supplement form from several online retailers. In the Denver area, the Better Health Clinic is a TrimYou certified HCG weight-loss center. It has two locations: one in Westminster, the other in Littleton. The TrimYou certification ensures you are getting a high-quality original version of HCG.

Hormone and Cholesterol Testing

HCG Medical has two locations in the downtown Denver area, one on Broadway, the other East 19th Street. It runs medically supervised programs to help you achieve your ideal weight using diet, HCG shots and exercise. Supervised by Dr. Schuler, consultations also include hormone and cholesterol level testing, as well as liver, kidney and thyroid function tests.

Sublingual HCG

The Lexlife Health Clinic on East Hampden Avenue in Denver uses HCG as part of its medically supervised weight-loss program and offers HCG shots, or the sublingual liquid form of HCG. The clinic also holds free monthly seminars on weight loss. Dr. Parker who runs the center is a qualified doctor and Fellow of the American Society of Laser Medicine and Surgery.

Theories/Speculation

Those who support the HCG diet claim it is not a "quick fix" diet, and anyone losing weight using this method can go back to normal eating, while still keeping the weight off. Those against it, claim anyone eating just 500 calories a day will lose weight. Those who have used it claim they had no hunger pangs or irritability issues while taking the hormone. The idea behind this is that although dieters are only eating 500 calories a day, the body is getting sufficient energy requirements from fat stores, which in turn are burned off, leaving you slimmer.

Warning

It is important to consult a qualified professional when undertaking any extreme weight-loss program. See your doctor for a full medical check-up first. Contact the Colorado Medical Society for a list of qualified professionals if you are in any doubt.
