Children's Activities in MA

With its miles of beaches, rolling hills and urban cultural centers, Massachusetts is a terrific place to visit with kids. The state is home to a wide variety of physically and intellectually stimulating activities that can both educate and entertain children of all ages. The state's varied seasonal climate creates new activity opportunities with each passing season.

Tubing

Tubing is an affordable alternative to skiing and a fun way for kids to spend time outdoors in the winter. Ski Ward of Shrewsbury, Masschusetts features five "TubaSlide" trails, two lifts and tube rental throughout the winter for children six or older. No additional equipment is provided. Trained staff outline safety precautions to insure each rider reaches the bottom of the hill safely. Starting locations and grooming times are changed to cater to conditions. An on-site snack bar is also available for guests.

Animal Farms

Western Massachusetts is home to several farms, many of which have petting zoos and other activities geared towards children and families. McCray's Animal Farm of South Hadley features a free animal farm that is home to ducks, goats, sheep, pigs and a llama. The farm is also home to an 18-hole miniature golf course that features running brooks, cascading waterfalls and covered bridges.McCary's also hosts bonfires and fall hayrides that can be pre-booked for birthday parties or special occasions.

Museums

Massachusetts has several childrens museums located across the state, from the Children's Lighthouse Memorial in Edgartown to the Holyoke Children's Museum. The Boston Children's museum is the state's most expansive museum for kids, and features a myriad of interactive exhibits. The New Balance Climb exhibit is a three story climbing platform which encourages kids to estimate space and practice risk taking. The Common exhibit lets kids navigate through a giant maze, play musical chairs, play a giant chess game and perform dances.

Beaches

Massachusetts' eastern shore is home to hundreds of beaches, many which feature safe tides and tide pools that are perfect for children to swim and play in. Ipswich's Crane Beach has four miles of white sands beaches and a gentle surf, in addition to lifeguards and an on-site concession stand. Stage Fort Park in Gloucester has public restrooms and an inlet cove that is safe for kids to swim in. Boston's Constitution beach has a large playground and tennis court to compliment its ocean access. Admission is free to all Massachusetts beaches.

Fruit Picking

Fruit picking is a great way to get kids outdoors and to instill and education and appreciation for the food production process. Northboro's Tougas Family Farm has fruits and vegetables to pick all season long. From peaches, strawberries, cherries, blueberries, pumpkins and raspberries the family can load up on fresh produce no matter what time of the season they visit. The farm also has a barnyard animal observatory, playground and farm kitchen where kids can watch processes like donut and cider making.
