While store-bought products certainly have their benefits, many people have discovered the advantages of using household products for home hair treatments. These all-natural ingredients can lead to healthy, shinier hair that looks and feels great. Eggs, olive oil and vinegar are a few of the top household products that you can use as hair treatments. Though each has a different method of use and purpose, you can combine them to create better-looking hair.
Types
Though eggs, olive oil and vinegar are all useful hair treatment ingredients, there are certain varieties of each of these products that have particularly helpful benefits when it comes to hair. Egg whites and egg yolks should be used for oily and dry hair, respectively, says Mother Nature Network. According to Care2, raw apple cider vinegar tends to be the most useful for hair treatments because of its high levels of enzymes and minerals.
Benefits
Egg whites have bacteria-removing enzymes that remove excess oils from hair, while egg yolks boast the fats and proteins that add moisture to dry hair, explains Mother Nature Network. Meanwhile, olive oil repairs dry and damaged hair. Apple cider vinegar fights dandruff and also gives hair a healthy, beautiful shine, says Care2.
Methods
When using egg whites or yolks, use 1/2 cup of whichever ingredient suits your hair type. For normal hair, use a mixture of both. Smooth the mixture onto damp, clean hair and let it sit for 20 minutes. Then rinse off the egg in cool water and shampoo your hair.
For olive oil, warm about 1 tbsp. at a time of the mixture and slowly massage it into your scalp while your hair is damp. Once your scalp has been covered, rub the remaining oil into the ends of your hair. Leave the oil on and cover it with a plastic bag for at least 30 minutes. Then rinse and shampoo.
For adding shine to hair, mix 1 cup vinegar with 2 cups warm water; then work the mixture into damp hair. Rinse after you've used entire mixture. You can make a scalp treatment with 1/2 cup vinegar and 2 cups warm water. Massage this mixture into the scalp and rinse it off after 30 minutes.
Time Frame
Mother Nature Network advises you use egg white treatments every two weeks, while the egg yolk treatment should be limited to once a month. You can use olive oil treatments as often as you like. Perform vinegar treatments for the hair up to three times a week, while vinegar treatments for the scalp can be performed every day, says Care2.
Considerations
Raw eggs can include bacteria, especially in the whites, says Incredible Edible Egg. Make sure to wash your hands after working with eggs and don't let your treatment get near your mouth or eyes.
Additionally, vinegar users should pay attention to the way their hair reacts to the treatment. The vinegar treatment for shiny hair may cause dryness, warns Care2. If so, cut down on the number of times per week that you perform the treatment.
