Learning to dress a new baby is one of many things new parents must learn after welcoming the baby into their family. Baby clothes are available in a wide variety of styles and materials, but knowing what to choose can be difficult and overwhelming. Dressing a baby involves a combination of style and function, in addition to consideration of the weather and temperature both inside and outside.

Step 1

Choose clothing made of lightweight and breathable fabrics, such as cotton or cotton blends. During warm summer months, dress the baby in light colored fabrics to reflect the sun's rays.

Step 2

Purchase clothing that is appropriately sized for your baby. Sleepers, onesies, shirts and pants should fit without being too tight and restricting movement. Clothing that is too loose burns easily in the event of a fire and should be avoided.

Step 3

Dress the baby in clothing that is comfortable, without bulky seems or stitches. Materials should be soft, not scratchy or irritating. Avoid clothing with large collars or decorative, nonfunctional items such as extra buttons or snaps.

Step 4

Dress the baby in layers during cool weather and place a hat on her head if the air inside the house is cool, and when going outside. Avoid overdressing the baby or applying too many blankets. Overdressing a baby can cause a fever. If the baby becomes irritable or sweaty, remove a layer of clothing to avoid overheating.

Step 5

Place socks on the baby's feet if the weather is cool. Shoes are not needed before the baby learns to walk. If the child is old enough to pull up and cruise, choose shoes that fit well and provide ½ inch of growing room. Soft bottomed shoes provide the ability for the child to feel the ground under his feet, but still provide protection.
