Coughing can be a voluntary or involuntary action. It is the body's way of freeing the airways of obstructions and irritations. While coughing is an important way of maintaining lung health, chronic coughing can lead to problems staying asleep, chest pain and urinary incontinence. Additionally, chronic coughing is disruptive and can lead to stress with others who share your home.
How Long
According to the National Lung Health Education Program and The University of Maryland Medical Center, a chronic cough is one that lasts longer than three weeks.
Causes
There is a wide range of reasons someone may develop a chronic cough. According to the National Lung Health Education Program, chronic bronchitis brought on by smoking is the most common reason for chronic coughing. Someone may also develop a chronic cough after suffering from a viral or bacterial infection. Allergies can lead to a post-nasal drip, which causes coughing. People who suffer from gastroesophageal reflux disease often develop a chronic cough. The National Lung Health Education Program reports less common reasons for chronic cough such as tuberculosis, cancer, some forms of congestive heart failure and enlarged tonsils.
Easing the Symptoms
The University of Maryland Medical Center recommends easing the discomfort of chronic coughing with warm showers or a vaporizer. Fluids will ease the pain in your throat and thin any secretions. The Mayo Clinic reports that honey added to hot tea or water can act as a mild cough suppressant.
Visiting the Doctor
A cough that lingers for three weeks is worth a trip to the physician. Even if your cough does not yet meet the definition of a chronic cough, it is important to visit the doctor immediately if the cough affects your ability to sleep or participate in normal daily activities or if you cough up blood. The University of Maryland Medical Center also recommends visiting the doctor immediately if you have a history of heart disease, if the chronic cough is combined with weight loss or night sweats or if you have trouble breathing.
