Many people occasionally will suffer a bout of chapped lips, depending on a variety of conditions. Cold air, wind, sun and illness all can lead to lips that become dry and irritated. Although the mouth area has a natural pigmentation that makes the skin darker, the surface is similar to any facial skin. Your skin can benefit from an exfoliation treatment to remove built up oil, dirt and dead skin cells. If you have lips that are dry, dark and chapped, some home remedies can provide an initial boost of moisture and healing, and daily maintenance can keep lips soft and healthy.

Step 1

Mix 1/2 tsp. granulated sugar with one to two drops of water in a small dish to form an exfoliating paste. Rub the paste in a circular motion over your lips to exfoliate. Concentrate on flaky areas and corners.

Step 2

Wet a washcloth and rub it over your lips to remove the exfoliating paste.

Step 3

Wash your face normally with a mild cleanser. Repeat the lip treatment at least once a day.

Step 4

Apply a balm to your lips. This can be a commercial product, beeswax, lanolin or olive oil. Cover your lips with the balm frequently throughout the day and immediately after washing. The balm will keep your lips protected and moisturized.

Tips and Warnings

  • Drink water throughout the day. Dry lips may be a sign of dehydration. Protect your lips when facing extreme cold or sun with a product that contains an SPF of 15 or higher.
  • Sores on the lips may need medical treatment. If you have chronic cold sores, you may develop an infection. Sores that do not heal will need to be evaluated to eliminate skin cancer as the cause.

Things You'll Need

  • 1/2 tsp. granulated sugar
  • Water
  • Small dish
  • Washcloth
  • Mild facial cleanser
  • Balm
