Based on the idea of the law of attraction, The Secret is a self-help method that focuses on the giving and receiving of positive energy, and some believe it can be used to attain just about any goal. When you send positive energy out into the universe, then the same positive energy will be returned to you. Believe you can achieve a goal, and it will happen. Believe you can't, and you will fail. Though smoking is a notoriously difficult habit to kick, this relatively simple theory can be used to help people stop smoking, provided they believe they can succeed.
Step 1
Ask the universe for help to quit smoking. Sending out your intentions to the universe opens yourself up to change and invites the universe to provide you with the strength you need to succeed in your task.
Step 2
Visualize yourself as a nonsmoker. Imagine being able to dine comfortably at any restaurant without having to duck out on your companions to grab a smoke. See yourself getting extra work done at the office because you cut out smoking breaks from your day. Fantasize about being able to ride in your car comfortably in the winter because you don't have to roll down the window when it's snowing to smoke. Anticipate always having the money for tolls because you can keep your spare change in your car's ashtray instead of ashes and butts. Dream about the vacation you can take using the money you didn't spend on cigarettes during the year.
Step 3
Behave as if you are already a nonsmoker. Habits often dictate and define a person, so redefine yourself as a nonsmoker by altering your usual habits that relate to smoking. Replace cigarette packs with packs of gum in your purse or desk drawer. Get rid of all or your cigarette lighters even if you use them in your household for lighting candles since nonsmokers have matches or special extended lighters designed specifically for these purposes instead of pocket cigarette lighters. Go to the convenience store only for gas, and don't go inside unless you need a drink or snack. Get rid of any sprays or other items that are designed to remove the smell of smoke from your breath or clothes. All of this will send out the message to the universe that you are a nonsmoker, and it will also reinforce nonsmoking behavior.
Step 4
Believe that you are no longer a smoker. Believing can be the most challenging part of using The Secret since human beings have a hard time with faith and knowing they deserve something they want, but it is a critical step. You must believe that you will succeed in order to overcome your addiction to cigarettes.
Step 5
Thank the universe for your blessings. Being thankful not only puts out positive vibrations to the universe, which then reciprocates into positive things coming back to you, but it also helps to keep you in a positive and productive frame of mind.
Tips and Warnings
- Don't beat yourself up if you begin to think negatively or you slip up from time to time. Smoking is a difficult addiction to break, so you should give yourself a break. Just realign yourself with your goals and put your mind back in a positive frame, and try again. Try to hang out with nonsmokers whenever you can since like attracts like.
- Smoking is a very dangerous habit, and if using The Secret alone does not help, try it in concert with other techniques since quitting could save your life.
