Babies are curious about the world they live in and will naturally grab anything they can get their hands on, including shoelaces. It can be a constant struggle to keep shoelaces tied on your baby's feet. Your baby may even learn to untie her shoelaces intentionally, playing with you to see your reaction. Several techniques can help to keep laces tied and in place despite your child's best efforts to undo them.
Step 1
Tie your baby's shoelaces in a double knot. Once you have completed tying a bow in the shoelace, tie the loops in a tight, single overhand knot. This knot effectively lock the ends of the bow, preventing your child from pulling the bow open.
Step 2
Tie a hidden knot. Lace the shoes in a straight lacing pattern by first inserting the ends of the lace up through two of the eyelets on one side of the shoe, then down through the opposite eyelets. Bring the lace ends up through the two eyelets above these eyelets and down through the opposite eyelets. Continue this pattern until you reach the last two eyelets. Tie the ends together inside the shoe with a square knot and tuck the laces into the shoe.
Step 3
Purchase a pair of shoelace locks. Tie your baby's shoelaces. Slide each bow into a lace keeper, and fasten the top. Your baby will not have the necessary strength to undo the locks. You can release them easily to untie your baby's shoes to remove them. Shoelace locks are inexpensive and available at most good shoe stores or the baby section of department stores.
Step 4
Purchase a pair of Velcro shoes. Velcro shoes are easier to put on, and your child likely won't have the strength necessary to separate the sides of Velcro to take the shoes off.
