What To Look For

There are generally two kinds of baseball hats: those that are designed to fit the size of your head, or "fitted" caps, and those that come with an adjustable strap on the back and are designed to fit all sizes, or adjustable hats. Also, some caps come equipped with an elastic band, able to fit any size head while avoiding the adjustable strap.

Common Pitfalls

Adjustable baseball hats come with a plastic or Velcro strap that is prone to breaking or tearing. And while fitted hats are perhaps more durable, they can sometimes shrink and no longer fit your head. That is why it's important to read the washing and drying instructions. Still, fitted hats tend to be more durable than adjustable hats, which is why fitted hats are almost always more expensive. The best way to determine the size for a fitted baseball hat is to have a salesperson measure your head.

Where To Buy

Baseball hats are sold by hundreds of retail stores, both online and in sporting goods stores. Major and minor league teams also sell hats at their team shops at their stadiums. Also, many professional teams have entire stores devoted to officially licensed apparel in malls or outlet stores in the areas in which they play.

Cost

Fitted baseball hats are typically more expensive than adjustable hats, simply because fitted hats are considered to be more comfortable and, again, durable. Another factor in cost is the level of play of the team whose logo is adorning the hat. For instance, a hat for a successful major league team such as the New York Yankees is likely to cost more than a hat featuring the logo of a minor club such as the Akron Aeros. Either way, baseball hats typically run anywhere from $12 to $25 each. Of course, if you live near a baseball stadium, you might just be able to get a hat for the cost of admission to a game. That's because almost every professional team at every level offers a "hat night," in which free hats are given to fans in attendance.

Accessories

Anyone who follows baseball knows there is more to the game than just baseball hats. In other words, baseball teams at all levels offer a wide variety of accessories. That includes everything from jackets to jerseys to T-shirts to collectibles such as bobbleheads and key chains--all of which sport the same logo and team colors as the hat.
