A treadmill can be a significant financial investment. Depending on the model and features, in-home treadmills are priced anywhere from $500 to $6,000. Taking care of your treadmill by doing light maintenance on it will keep it running for many years. Cleaning, lubricating and adjusting your treadmill can all be done by you with minimal tools or mechanical knowledge. These tasks don't take up much time and will likely save you time and money in the future.
Step 1
Clean the exposed areas of your treadmill after each use. Unplug the power cord from the wall. Use a cloth dampened with water. Do not use any cleaners or solvents on the walking belt. Wipe down the belt, motor casing, rails and console.
Step 2
Clean under the motor hood and under the walking belt once per month. Turn off and unplug the treadmill. Remove the plastic cover from the front of the unit. Use a vacuum to remove any dust and lint that has accumulated on the motor. Slide a dry cloth under the walking belt and wipe off the deck.
Step 3
Lubricate the walking belt as needed. Check your owner's manual for recommended frequency and type of lubricant to use. Unplug your treadmill. Lift one side of the walking belt and spray a generous amount of lubricant the length of the deck. Repeat on the other side. Run the belt at 3 mph for a few minutes. Walk on the belt for three to five minutes, which will help evenly distribute the lubricant.
Step 4
Adjust the walking belt. After each use, run the belt and stand at the end of the treadmill. Check if the belt is loose, slipping or off-center. If the belt is slipping, tighten it using a hex wrench. Turn the rear roller adjustment bolts clockwise. Turn both bolts equally. Lift the center of the walking belt. It should rise 3 to 4 inches off the deck. Continue tightening as needed. If the belt slips to one side, consult your owner's manual. Depending on the make and model of your unit, you will turn either one or both rear roller adjustment bolts to center the belt.
Tips and Warnings
