Home Treatments for Swollen Gums

According to MedlinePlus, swollen gums are enlarged gums that are common and can involve bits of gum near teeth. This part of the mouth is called papillae. Fortunately, many home treatments are available to prevent swollen gums and help treat them. There is no medical evidence to support any of the claims made.

Baking Soda and Water

The "Natural Health Magazine" explains that mixing baking soda with a high volume of water can help to treat swollen and bleeding gums. Combine the baking soda and water into a paste form, then apply it to the swollen area of the gums. Leave it for a few seconds, then wash the mouth out thoroughly. This should be done two times a week to see any results. Also, be sure to brush continuously after using this method to get rid of excess baking soda, as it can stick to the gumline.

Aloe Vera

The aloe vera plant is used to help treat a variety of conditions such as burns, wounds, skin irritations and constipation. Aloe gel comes from the central part of the aloe leaf. The "Natural Health Magazine" says that gargling aloe gel with a small amount of water can help treat swollen gums and reduce their size. The University of Maryland Medical Center says that aloe vera can cause an allergic reaction, although it is rare. Those looking to take this herbal medication should speak with a health care professional.

Clove Oil

The "Natural Health Magazine" says that clove oil can help reduce the swelling of gums that are swollen. When people brush their teeth, many do not clean well enough between the teeth, which results in swollen gums from gingivitis.
Take a small amount of clove oil and place it onto a finger, then apply it to the affected area of the mouth. Remember to wash the mouth thoroughly after using clove oil. It is best do this a few times a week until the swelling decreases.
