Whether you are following a training schedule or just curious, tracking your exercise distances is a great way to measure progress, stay motivated and stick to a training schedule. With GPS tracking devices and the Internet, many resources are available to athletes wishing to track their distances.

Internet

Step 1

Visit the website MapMyRun.com to track your distances and maintain logs of information.

Step 2

Click on the "start mapping" button. A new page will open with a map.

Step 3

Type in your location in the blank space next to the "jump to" button. This will bring up a map of your specific location. You may zoom in to view streets or zoom out to view more cities.

Step 4

With your cursor, click on your specific location. Continue to click on the screen, following the route you ran or plan on running. The mile gauge on the right will continue to add up your mileage.

GPS

Step 1

Purchase a GPS watch to track your distances as you run. This is a good option for an athlete who wants to know exactly how much distance ran and the amount remaining throughout the run. It is also effective for measuring pace. The watch picks up a wireless GPS signal.

Step 2

Locate a GPS signal and press the "start tracking" button to begin tracking a run.

Step 3

Press the "stop" button when the run is complete, and you would like the device to stop adding mileage.

Step 4

Connect the GPS watch to a personal computer to upload running statistics, such as average pace and distance and save them.

Nike + iPod Sport Kit

Step 1

Purchase a Nike + ipod Sport Kit for $29 to track your runs with a sensor and your iPod.

Step 2

Attach the Nike sensor to your shoe laces. You may have to buy a pouch for the sensor that easily attaches to your shoelaces and holds the sensor in place.

Step 3

Visit the iTunes store on your computer or iPod to download the free Nike + Sport application.

Step 4

Hold your iPod and open the Nike + Sport application while sensor is in your shoe.

Step 5

Click on the green "start run" button. The iPod will automatically detect the shoe sensor and begin tracking your run distance.
