The Texas Board of Nursing has approved professional nursing education programs in Dallas at four public community colleges and a private nursing school. The programs offered options from certificates to associate degrees. There are other nursing programs in Dallas that have not been approved by the Texas Board of Nursing. You should carefully investigate the unapproved programs before enrolling.
Associate Nursing Degree
The Dallas County Community College District offers associate degrees in nursing at four community colleges, including Brookhaven College, Mountain View College, El Centro College and North Lake College. The Associate in Applied Sciences (AAS) degrees at Brookhaven and Mountain View require 72 credit hours earned in four semesters. The AAS degree programs at El Centro College and North Lake College require 71 credits. All four programs include classroom, laboratory and hospital clinical experiences and prepare you to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) to earn your Texas nursing license. The AAS program at North Lake is administered and accredited by El Centro, although classes are held at the North Lake College campus.
Private Associate Degree
The Dallas Nursing Institute (DNI) offers an 80-week program in five terms for you to earn an Associate of Applied Science degree in nursing. DNI uses a "block format," that presents all information applied to a specific subject area in one course, presented from the basic to the more complex. The program follows the Texas Board of Nursing protocols to train a nurse as a provider of care, coordinator of care and member of the profession. Primary focus is on disease management and prevention and promoting health. As with the Dallas County Community Colleges, DNI offers classroom, laboratory and clinical experiences and prepares you to take the NCLEX-RN examination.
Certificate Nursing Program
El Centro College offers a certificate in vocational nursing that allows you to find a job in a hospital, with home health services, correctional institutions, doctor's offices or nursing homes. The El Centro program is 51-credit hours and prepares you for the NCLEX-Practical Nurse exam which, when passed, will allow you to be certified as a Licensed Vocational Nurse under the auspices of the Texas Board of Nursing.
Private Certificate Program
The Dallas Nursing Institute's vocational nursing program is also 51-credit hours and approved by the Texas Board of Nursing. The program covers anatomy, body growth, patient care and assessment, medications, nursing procedures as well as medical terminology and prepares graduates for the NCLEX-PN exam.
LVN to AAS
DNI also offers students who are already Licensed Vocational Nurses or Licensed Practical Nurses a transition program to earn their AAS degree in nursing.
